Many people wonder how large aluminum shutters – roller shutters can be safely manufactured without problems. What is the width limit for single-leaf, double-leaf, or four-leaf shutters? How large shutters – roller shutters (shutter leaves) can we manufacture, in terms of width, what is the weight limit that shutter mechanisms can withstand (without causing problems), and what are the specifications provided by profile design and production companies (e.g., Europa, Alumil, Etem)? In this article, we will separately analyze how large shutters – roller shutters can be safely manufactured, as well as what roller shutter width can be produced without intermediate divisions (single roller shutters), and what is the width limit given by companies for each roller shutter slat (roller shutter dimensions).

Large hinged shutters (shutters) in width
Hinged aluminum shutters (single-leaf, double-leaf, or four-leaf shutters) can practically be manufactured in any dimension, but profile design and production companies (Europa, Alumil etc.) as well as mechanism companies (shutter hinges), set some restrictions on the manufacturing of large shutters, depending on their type (single-leaf, double-leaf, or four-leaf aluminum shutters). In most constructions, however, there are no clear restrictions, and most manufacturers work empirically.
Let’s see, then, which factors must be taken into account to manufacture large hinged aluminum shutters without problems. The following six factors should be considered in combination.
A. The type of shutters (single-leaf, double-leaf, or four-leaf aluminum shutters).
B. The weight of each leaf.
C. The dimensions (width x height) of their leaves.
D. The mounting point of the shutters on the jamb – masonry, related to the type of hinges used.
E. The deflection of the aluminum profiles.
F. The type of aluminum louver to be used and its weight.
Large four-leaf aluminum shutters
In cases where aluminum shutters are four-leaf, the width of each leaf should not exceed 45 centimeters. This means that we can manufacture four-leaf shutters with a maximum width of 180 centimeters (1.8 meters).
Large double-leaf and single-leaf aluminum shutters
In the case of double-leaf and single-leaf shutters, there is no specific guidance from aluminum profile manufacturing companies regarding construction limits, which is why most aluminum frame manufacturers work empirically. A general rule is that for double-leaf aluminum shutters, their maximum width should not exceed two meters (200cm), while for single-leaf shutters, the maximum width cannot exceed 1.2 meters (120cm).
Large sliding aluminum shutters
For large sliding shutters (single-leaf and double-leaf), the only restriction for their construction concerns the aluminum louvers. Usually, we can manufacture, without any problem, sliding aluminum shutters whose leaf width reaches 2.1 meters, if the weight allows it (if the rollers can withstand it) and also their louvers, as we will see below.

Practically, most aluminum louvers can be manufactured in any width. Profile manufacturing companies (e.g., shutters Europa, shutters Alumil) set restrictions on how large shutter constructions we can make. In this case, we should be informed by the design company about the limits of each one.
In all the above, the five factors we mentioned earlier should be taken into account: the type of shutters (single-leaf, double-leaf, or four-leaf), the weight of each leaf, the dimensions of the leaves, the type of hinges, and the mounting point of the shutter on the jamb – masonry, as well as the deflection of the profiles. These factors should be considered in combination by the aluminum shutter manufacturer. In any case, we should always ask for a guarantee of good operation of the construction, which every manufacturer is obliged to provide us, to ensure that all factors have been carefully evaluated and our shutters will work correctly over time.
Plastic shutters – Shutters made of PVC
The plastic shutters – PVC shutters have greater restrictions regarding the size of constructions that can be implemented (large PVC shutters). This happens for three reasons:
a. All plastic shutter manufacturing companies use profiles that are mainly imported from northern European countries (Germany, Austria, etc.), which do not have large openings – windows and balcony doors, where shutters – external blinds are used (in most cases, external blinds are not used on large dimension frames and on most frames). For this very reason, they have not designed large hinged shutters.
b. Plastic shutters – PVC shutters have a high weight, regarding the leaves and frames, if metal internal elements are used within the PVC profiles. The high weight does not allow for the construction of large dimensions.
c. Plastic slats – shutter louvers (plastic shutter louvers – PVC) do not have the internal metal reinforcements that their profiles and frames have, consequently, large shutter dimensions cannot be manufactured.
For all the above reasons, most PVC frame manufacturing companies (plastic frames) in Greece recommend aluminum shutters for their constructions (large shutters – roller shutters). In any case, we should always ask for a guarantee of good operation of the construction, which every manufacturer is obliged to provide us, to ensure that all factors have been carefully evaluated and our shutters will work correctly over time.
Large aluminum roller shutters and roller shutter dimensions (width limit)
For aluminum roller shutters, the roller shutter slats – louvers play a decisive role in the construction of large dimensions.
