What are thermally broken roller shutters?

Thermally broken roller shutters (energy-efficient roller shutters) are roller shutter boxes which include two (2) stages/levels of insulation: polyamides (mainly for thermal insulation) and additional foam insulating materials e.g. DOW 5 (for sound insulation and thermal insulation), aiming to increase the thermal and sound insulation of frames with roller shutters.

A very serious problem that existed in old wooden roller shutter boxes, and even in simple aluminum roller shutters (without insulation), which some people still use today, is that cold and noise penetrated through them and entered our homes.

What are simple aluminum roller shutters?

Thermally Broken Roller Shutters (6)

Simple aluminum roller shutter boxes are plain aluminum sheets that cover – enclose the roller shutter slats without any insulation whatsoever. Essentially, what protects you from cold and noise in simple aluminum boxes is an aluminum sheet approximately 1.4 millimeters thick. As a result, the cold that enters the box through the gap where the roller shutter slats go, enters your home unimpeded, which thermally broken roller shutters (thermally broken roller shutter boxes) prevent.

Insulated Roller Shutter Boxes

We faced the exact same problem for years with old wooden roller shutter boxes (large boxes with curtain rods), which were the main source of energy loss, noise, and a breeding ground for contamination. Now, after installing new energy-efficient frames, we insulate them with additional insulating materials (see how we insulate wooden roller shutter boxes with insulation).

What more do thermally broken roller shutter boxes (energy-efficient boxes – roller shutters) offer?

Thermally Broken Roller Shutters (4)

As mentioned above, thermally broken roller shutters (thermally broken roller shutter boxes) are roller shutter boxes which include two (2) stages of insulation:

  • Polyamides 32 mm thick that prevent temperature transfer (thermal bridge).
  • Additional foam insulating materials e.g. DOW 5 that contribute to increasing the thermal and sound insulation of

energy-efficient roller shutters

Many of the thermally broken roller shutter boxes reach a thermal insulation level (roller shutter box thermal transmittance coefficient Usb) Usb= 1.1 W/m2 K!

Also, thermally broken roller shutter boxes (energy-efficient roller shutters) significantly increase two important indicators for frames that include roller shutters – external shutters:

  • UW,corr.[W/(m²K)] is the corrected thermal transmittance coefficient of the frame with roller shutters or external shutters when the roller shutters – slats are closed – lowered for 8 hours. This indicator is essential because it is common practice for roller shutters – external shutters to be closed for some hours.
  • UW,rb[ W/(m2K) ] is the thermal transmittance coefficient of the frame with the roller shutter box (slats) or the external shutter in the closed position.

We would like to note that the thermal insulation of a frame with the roller shutters closed – lowered is significantly increased (better). See how much you gain and more information in our article how to reduce energy losses from frames – windows.
